Guardianship Support Center

"Competence" is the ability of a person to manage his or her own affairs. Sometimes a person with a severe mental disability may be unable to manage his or her property or care for himself or herself. A guardian is a person appointed by the court to make the decisions that person is unable to make independently and to be an advocate for the person's interests. Before a judge can appoint a guardian for a person, the judge must find that the person is "incompetent." This toll-free telephone line is available to all individuals with questions concerning guardianship law - how to determine whether an individual needs a guardian, how the court procedures work, the roles, responsibilities and authority of guardians, and alternatives to guardianship.

State Bar of Wisconsin Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS)

Website: https://www.wisbar.org/

We’re here to help you figure out if you need a lawyer, and how to proceed if you do. When you call the service, you will not get legal advice. However, you will talk to a legal assistant who is experienced in analyzing potential legal problems – and in helping you locate the best source of help.

After speaking with an LRIS legal assistant, you may decide that you need to hire an attorney. If so, we can refer you to an attorney in your area who has indicated an interest in your type of legal situation. Attorneys referred through LRIS agree to charge no more than $20 for the first consultation, up to one half hour.

In some cases, you will resolve your legal issue at the first meeting. If your problem requires work beyond the first half-hour, you will be charged the lawyer’s regular fees.
